Switzerland Launches Sustainability Curriculum in All Cantonal Schools

Lausanne, June 2025 — Starting this academic year, all cantonal school systems in Switzerland are required to implement a unified curriculum module on sustainability, climate literacy, and environmental responsibility. The reform spans primary to tertiary education, integrating key themes such as circular economy, biodiversity, and climate justice into traditional subjects like science, geography, and economics.

The national initiative was developed in consultation with educators, environmental experts, and youth organizations. Schools will receive teaching materials in multiple national languages and will benefit from teacher training programs to ensure consistent delivery across the cantons.

This bold curriculum reform reflects Switzerland’s broader commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthens the country's position as a global leader in environmental education.
