Swiss reconciliation with international aid under scrutiny: Calls to rethink education funding strategy

Despite its well-established global reputation as a leader in quality education, Switzerland has come under fire for reducing its financial contributions to international education aid. The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and its Swiss advocacy partners have urged the federal government to reconsider recent cuts to development funding—warning of potential worldwide consequences.

Since the announcement on January 29, 2025, Switzerland has scaled back support aimed at improving basic education in developing countries. Advocates argue that Switzerland’s leadership and experience had previously helped millions of students gain access to schooling and essential learning outcomes. Now, these gains are at risk as global challenges—including crises and gender disparities—press for renewed investment.

In response, development groups are calling for a reversal of the decision. They emphasize that Switzerland’s educational expertise remains a valuable asset in international cohesion and peace-building. By maintaining its investment in global education, the country can continue to deliver on its long-standing role in shaping stronger education systems within fragile communities.
