Swiss National AI Institute: Assessing Computational Thinking in Schools

In March 2025, a Swiss research team published promising findings on evaluating algorithmic thinking in compulsory education. The study introduced an intelligent assessment system capable of measuring students’ ability to design algorithms through both digital and unplugged (offline) exercises. Equipped with real-time probabilistic scoring, the system offers nuanced insight into how these skills—pattern recognition, decomposition, algorithm design—develop in various educational settings.

This initiative represents a major milestone in integrating computational thinking and AI literacy within the Swiss school system, enabling scalable assessments and better tracking of digital learning outcomes
